Department of Animal Science

        

General Information

Animal Science is a field that aims to increase animal products quantitatively and qualitatively with taking into account the economic aspect of agricultural activities. Animal Science Program offers theoretical and practical education on the scientific principles that underlie the husbandry, breeding, nutrition and health protection of agricultural animals at the level of undergraduate and graduate level.

The department is located in Faculty Agricultural Ali Numan Kirac Campus of Eskisehir Osmangazi University. It was established in 2010 and currently has six faculty members; one professor, one associate professor, three assistant professor and one assistant. The department has three sub-programs; Animal Breeding, Biometry and Genetics and Nutrition. Department of Animal Science started undergraduate education in 2011 with 31 students.

Mission

The Department of Animal Science as a mission; It aims to implement modern and qualified educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to contribute to science and society by conducting effective research and development studies for the safe and sufficient production of animal foods required from the farm to the table to raise healthy generations.

Vision

The Department of Animal Science as a vision; It aims to be one of the leading departments in the regional and national livestock sector by keeping the level of education and research programs high by cooperating with national and international organizations.

Goal of the Program

The primary goal of the program is to conduct research to solve problems and to improve the current state of the livestock sector and graduate animal scientist who considers animal welfare as well as  the needs and sensitiveness of the society; to support animal production on an ongoing basis by using biotechnological methods as well as conventional methods within scientific and economic principles; could keep up with national and international sectorial competition; adopt scientific considerations, be able to analyze conditions and transfer knowledge to the shareholders and doesn’t leave  their needs without response, adopt the principle of lifelong learning and improve himself/herself.

Program Outcomes

  1. To gain individual working ability and ability of disciplinary and inter-disciplinary teamwork.

  2. To have occupational and ethical responsibility.

  3. To gain effective oral and written communication ability, to be aware of the continuity of learning concept, to follow up scientific and technological improvements and renew himself/herself continuously.

  4. To have knowledge of basic sciences and be able to use them for modeling and solving problems relevant to animal science.

  5. To be aware of agricultural and animal science activities and be able to an entrepreneur or a guide in animal science activities.

  6. To know the problems of stockbreeding in Turkey and to be able to offer solution for the problems.

  7. To obtain skills for improvement of animal husbandry via comprehending basics of animal breeding. 

  8. To obtain knowledge and skills of animal husbandry and comprehend the importance of connection between animal husbandry and market.

  9. To be able to identify animal species and breeds and follow up their current situation in Turkey.

  10. To gain knowledge of animal feeding, animal feeds and nutrient contents of feeds.

  11. To understand the importance of feed production for a profitable stockbreeding and raise awareness among farmers on the issue.

  12. To gain knowledge about feed technologies, feed preparation and feeding.

  13. To learn how to gain genetic improvement in farm animals.

  14. To understand gene sources and their importance in animal husbandry.

  15. To learn how to use statistical methods and evaluation of the results in animal production.

Employment possibilities of the graduates

Graduates of the Department could be employed by universities, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Forestry and Water Management, public or private banks, agricultural credit cooperatives, municipalities, private farms and food factories and so forth. Graduates can also establish their own farms.

Facilities-Labs

The department is located in Faculty Agricultural Ali Numan Kirac Campus of Eskisehir Osmangazi University. It was established in 2010 and currently has two faculty members; one professor, four assistant professor and one assistant. ESOGÜ Agricultural Faculty, Ali Numan Kıraç Campus has Poultry Animal Research and Application Coop, Small Livestock Research and Application Laboratory and Laboratory, 1280-capacity Hatchery, Quail Breeding Unit, Broiler Breeding Unit, Feed Unit, Feed and Animal Feed Animal Biotechnology Laboratories are available.n the near future. In addition to this, we also supply our farmers with raw materials such as Dry Matter, Crude Ash, Crude Fat, Crude Protein, ADF, NDF, ADL-Lignin, Gas Production System, Color Meter etc. in Feeds and Animal Nutrition Laboratories, where rough and intensive feed analysis services are provided.
